FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) A 70-year-old babysitter has been arrested and charged with child neglect after deputies say she left two children unattended while she went into a store Tuesday.

Capt. Mike Nunn, spokesman for the Florence County Sheriff's Office, said deputies responded to a report of a small child left in a vehicle in the parking lot of a business along South Irby Street. When they arrived, they found a 10-month-old baby strapped in a child carrier in the front seat of the vehicle.

The baby was said to be sitting in direct sunlight with a temperature of 80 degrees. A 5-year-old child was also found in the parking lot, unattended, according to Nunn.

Deputies were able to locate Betty Jones of Lynchburg inside the store and found she was the babysitter for both children.

According to Nunn, the baby had been left inside the vehicle for an extended period of time prior to deputies' arrival and the five-year-old initially went into the store with Jones but later went out to the parking lot without her.

Jones was then arrested and charged with unlawful neglect of a child, and both children were turned over to their mother, who was at work at the time of the incident.

Jones is being held at the Florence County Detention Center waiting a bond hearing.
