Dillon football player killed in crash identified

DILLON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) The teen driver of a pickup truck who was killed after crashing into a ditch off a roadway in Dillon County Wednesday has been identified by the Dillon County Coroner's Office.

The driver of a pickup truck, identified as James Wright David, Jr., also known as Jake, by Dillon County Coroner Donnie Grimsley was heading north on SC 57, and was ten miles south of Dillon when he swerved multiple times before hitting a ditch.

Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the accident just before 2 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The force of the crash caused the 17-year-old to be ejected from the pickup truck when it overturned, according to SCHP.

Officials also said David was not wearing a seat belt. However, the passenger, 18-year-old Tykel Madison of Dillon was wearing a seat belt and sustained minor injuries. Madison was taken to Mcleod Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Grimsley said Jake David was a football player at Dillon High School. Dillon's roster lists Jake as a Senior Tight End.

WMBF News Reporter Crystal Moyer spoke with Jake's coach and will have more on his story beginning at 4 p.m. on WMBF News.

The incident remains under investigation by the SCHP.
