Powerball® Jackpot Climbs to $245 million

Posted: Updated:

SOUTH CAROLINA (WMBF) The Jackpot for Wednesday night's Powerball drawing has reached an estimated $245 million, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery.

Tickets sold in Columbia and Belvedere on Saturday produced two $10,000 winners.

"When the jackpot reaches historical levels, it gets attention. Those that don't play very often take a chance," said the Lottery's Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea.  "We want to remind everyone to please play responsibly."

Wednesday's Jackpot ranks among the ten largest in South Carolina's history. The winning odds have become naturally smaller, around 1 in 195 million.

Should someone win the $245 million Jackpot they have two options of payment. They may receive the total $245 million as a one-time cash payment of $146 million, or the $245 million jackpot paid over 29 years in 30 installments.

"When the jackpot gets high, players win and so does the state," said Bethea.  "Education is always a winner."

Anyone wishing to try their hand at Wednesday's drawing must purchase their $1 ticket from any South Carolina lottery retailer by 9:59 p.m. for the 10:59 p.m. drawing. For an extra $1, players can purchase PowerPlay to multiply non-jackpot winnings by the PowerPlay number drawn.

Players automatically win one million by matching five white balls with PowerPlay regardless of the multiplier selected.

Since the South Carolina Education Lottery began in 2002, more than 932,000 college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina's students. In all, more than $2.5 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
