HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) Northbound lanes of Highway 501 and Carolina Forest Boulevard are now open again following an accident Wednesday afternoon that called for a medical helicopter to land at the scene.

According to the agency's website, the accident occurred along Highway 501 at 4:30 p.m. at Carolina Forest Boulevard.

Pictures from the South Carolina Department of Transportation show a silver car literally on top of a red in color car. Another car was turned over onto its side.

Horry County Fire Rescue confirms two people were trapped inside the tangle of metal and one person had to be cut out of their vehicle through the roof.

A medical helicopter landed on scene and has since taken off. Units with HCFR said one person was transported to New Hanover Medical Center. Another driver was taken to Conway Medical Center.

All northbound lanes of Highway 501 were closed as units continued to work the scene. Traffic was diverted onto Carolina Forest Boulevard, but the road has since reopened to traffic.

WMBF News had a crew on the scene and will provide further details as they become available.
