Surfside Beach chiropractor arrested, accused of sexual assault

Posted: Updated:

SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A Surfside Beach chiropractor faces sexual assault charges after a female patient claims a July appointment went beyond a routine back adjustment.

Dr. Arnell Doby, 76, of Myrtle Beach, faces charges of third degree criminal sexual conduct after being arrested by Surfside Beach Police in July.

The arrest comes amid claims from a female patient that Doby allegedly placed his hands underneath her underwear during an appointment on July 13 and touched her inappropriately. The victim tells Surfside Beach investigators the incident allegedly happened while he massage and adjusted her.

An official police report claims the victim had been under Doby's treatment for approximately one year prior to the incident.

"[The] victim said she did, at times, question his procedures and always wore her shorts throughout her visits, which consisted of a massage and getting adjusted," the report stated.

An arrest warrant obtained by WMBF News reveals Doby admitted he placed his hands down the victim's shorts for treatment purposes, but "denied ever [inappropriately touching] the victim."

WMBF News attempted to contact Doby at his office and home on Thursday, but was unable to be located for comment.

Mitchell Vann, who owns an audio store beside Doby's office, says he never heard anyone complain about the doctor's procedures or work ethic. Vann says he has been seeing Doby for treatment, as well.

I've known him for 30 years. He's of the highest morals and standards," Vann said. "I'm shocked by [what WMBF News] told me... very much."

Surfside Beach Police Chief Mike Frederick says to his knowledge, the department has not criminally investigated Doby in the past. He did say, however, allegations like those brought forth against Doby aren't out of the ordinary.

"We have investigated similar incidents in all professions," he said. "There are a few bad actors in all professions."

Surfside Beach Police say Doby was released from custody shortly after his arrest on a $10,000 bond.
