HARTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - Hartsville Fire has responded to a fire at the Progress Energy-Darlington County Plant in Hartsville.

According to Donald Quist, spokesperson for the City of Hartsville, an explosion occurred at the Progress Energy Darlington County Plant around 2:20 p.m. The fire has been contained but there are still some hotspots. A weekend crew was working when the explosion occurred but no one was injured.

The Progress Energy-Darlington County Plant, located off of Highway 151, generates power for the City of Hartsville. It is approximately one mile from the HB Robinson Nuclear Plant.

According to Scott Sutton with Progress Energy, the Darlington County combustion turbine plant has a total output of 800 megawatts of energy. The explosion, and subsequent fire, occurred in one of thirteen turbines. The damaged turbine is currently offline pending investigation. The remaining twelve turbines are operational.

Hartsville Mayor Mel Pennington said,"Response was executed flawlessly. We went to assist with the ladder truck. My captain went in to help extinguish."
