SOCASTEE, SC (WMBF) - Drivers hitting the road in Socastee are now finding their daily commutes are a little longer, thanks to a $1.7 million bridge replacement project that started Monday.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation has ordered the replacement of a bridge on Enterprise Road, less than one mile from the intersection of SC-707 after signs of aging were discovered during a routine inspection.
In addition to signs of aging, SCDOT spokesman Mike Barbee says structural problems were also identified that required repairs.
Barbee says the department had the option of simply repairing the problem areas on the bridge, but ultimately decided those efforts would be ineffective from a cost standpoint. The department bid the job at a higher price than normal and wrote special clauses into a contract to move the replacement project along faster.
Officials say while the structural problems and aging did not pose an immediate safety concern for drivers on Enterprise Road, it could become an issue if not immediately addressed. Structural problems are often issues accompanying older bridges in Horry County, according to Barbee.
SCDOT crews are expected to wrap up work on the $1.7 million project by November 18. Until then, drivers are being asked to use Bay Road to access businesses and homes along Enterprise Road.
