Updates on MB airport now on Facebook

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - As construction continues at Myrtle Beach International Airport, it can be hard for drivers to keep up with all the shifting lanes at the airport entrance on Harrelson Boulevard.

The newest change will start Monday.

"Pretty much from now to the end of the year there's always going to be traffic shifts at the airport," explained Horry County Airports Marketing Director Lauren Morris.

So Morris has been using facebook more often to send out regular updates on the road and terminal construction.

"Facebook and social media, it's just a quick easy way to kind of get the information out, see really cool pictures," she said.

In addition to details about construction, there are also photos to show the progress, and occasionally Morris posts special airfares too.

Hilda Perez who was traveling back to New York Friday said it is a fine idea, but it is not for her.

"I just check [facebook] once in a while," Perez said. "I'm not really into facebook… but it sounds good for people who are really into facebook - sounds good."

Other travelers like Akeim Guiden from Atlanta love the idea, saying it could help them plan ahead during heavy construction periods.

"You can pretty much get up to date alerts immediately," Guiden said. "Therefore I could be on my way to the airport, check my facebook and say okay I need to get there 30 minutes earlier than I normally do or I can take my time and get something to eat on the way in."

Morris said facebook also allows for unique interaction with customers.

"Sometimes I'll just hear people ask me the same question over and over, and I'll take to facebook to just kind of answer it," Morris explained. "If people post to our page we'll do our best to answer it quickly as well too."

So while some people will turn to the facebook page [www.facebook.com/FlyMYR], she knows not everyone will get the latest updates. That is why she has some advice for drivers.

"Just know, no matter what, if you didn't catch the latest update, when you come here it's going to be different," she said.
