SCHP: Driver ran stop sign in double fatal crash

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate an accident involving a tractor trailer in Darlington County Thursday that killed two people.

Bob Beres, spokesman for the South Carolina Highway Patrol, said the accident occurred along U.S. 401 at the intersection of East Lynches River Road, also known as Secondary 27, around 5:30 p.m. in the Lamar area.

Beres said a 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck traveling east on East Lynches River Road ran a stop sign and crossed into the path of a 2012 Kenworth tractor trailer traveling south on U.S. 401. At that time, the tractor trailer collided with the pickup, which then caught fire.

Both the driver and passenger of the pickup truck were killed in the collision. Beres said they were not wearing seatbelts.

The driver of the tractor trailer, a Summerton man, was taken to Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, where his condition is unknown at this time.

Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee has identified the victims Friday afternoon as Hassell Lee Toney, 52, of Danese, WV and Larry McCormick, 35, of Elk View, WV.
