MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The body of a missing North Carolina swimmer has been located off the shores of Myrtle Beach, authorities confirmed early Monday morning.

The body of Lakelyn Horton, 25, was identified by the Horry County Coroner's Office shortly after it was located near 24th Avenue North just after 1:30 a.m. Officials say Horton died from asphyxiation caused by drowning.

Search and rescue teams from the U.S. Coast Guard, beach patrol and Department of Natural Resources have been looking for the man by air and water after he disappeared near 24th Avenue South on Saturday.

According to Myrtle Beach Police, reports of three distressed swimmers came in around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Witnesses reported seeing the trio behind the Compass Cove Resort near 23rd Avenue South and Ocean Boulevard. Two of the swimmers made it to shore, but Horton was unaccounted for.

"We were advised by a gentleman passing by that there were a couple of gentlemen in the water that needed help," says Sgt. Phillip Cain, with the Beach Patrol.

The other two swimmers were located and spoke with police to aid the search. Officials do not believe foul play contributed to Horton's death.
