Police increase checkpoint activity

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) An increase in police activity on the roads is encouraging drivers to take extra precautions when it comes to safety behind the wheel.

With more traffic checkpoints to catch anyone breaking the law, locals and tourists alike need to know what information to have with them at all times when driving.

It's all in an effort to keep everyone safe while behind the wheel, and the effort started Friday morning when troopers from the highway patrol conducted an early morning checkpoint in Carolina Forest.

Many times, Myrtle Beach officers will join in to assist in keeping our streets safer.

Police say they find everything from minor infractions like a broken headlight or seatbelt violations to more serious crimes that involve drugs and DUI cases.

The number one priority in these checkpoints is people's safety.

Law enforcement wants to get you through a checkpoint as fast as possible so that traffic doesn't get clogged.

Police say they choose where to do these checks based on where problems like speeding or a high number of collisions are most prominent.

If you get stopped at a checkpoint, police will ask for your license, vehicle registration and insurance and just look over the car to make sure it's not a hazard.

WMBF News wanted to get people's reaction to having these checkpoints in our area, and the overwhelming majority of people were glad police are out on the roads.

"For me, I feel like it's another precaution to keep our teenagers safe. I have a 17-year-old and I'd be more than happy for her to be stopped and checked," urges Grand Strand visitor Reda Robinson.

Police departments in different cities around our area conduct these checkpoints at various times all throughout the year.

The law enforcement network, which is a combined effort by several local police departments, will be conducting their next traffic checkpoint two weeks from Friday in Loris.
