FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Golf is a sport that many can play, but very few can consistently succeed at. One West Florence golfer has established himself as one of the best in the state, and is ready to take his game to the next level.
"It's really tough for a lot of people to just come out and play it, you've got to practice it all the time, it's not a sport you can just be good at," said Stephen Behr.
Behr has taken those words to heart, the recent West Florence graduate can pretty much always be found on a golf course.
"If you play one good round, you're going to be hooked on it for a long time and that's what is so great about it, but then again, it can knock you down for a while because it's a really tough game," said Behr.
For Stephen, his good rounds have far outweighed the bad. This season he came up one stroke short of winning back to back individual state titles in 4A golf.
"I was lucky enough to play well for the last two or three years. I've worked really hard and I was trying to go back to back this year, but I came up just short, but that's golf," said Behr.
His success made him highly recruited by colleges throughout the southeast, but he ultimately decided to stay in state to play for the Clemson Tigers next fall.
"It's just the perfect set up, everyone there is kind of a family," said Behr, "I really enjoy that."
Part of becoming a Clemson golfer is following in the footsteps of guys like Lucas Glover and Jonathan Byrd, who have seen plenty of success on the PGA Tour.
Filling their big shoes is something Stephen is certainly not afraid to do.
"They've had a lot of publicity this year and it's been really good for the school. Hopefully that will be me one day with Jonathan and Lucas and them having so much success, but there are some big shoes to fill, but that's a good thing to have," said Behr.
Stephen left Thursday for a national junior tournament in Arizona, and will compete in a number of tournaments in the southeast before enrolling at Clemson in the fall.
