Investigation launched in weekend police chase

Posted: Updated:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Horry County Police and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating a police chase and subsequent accident involving a motorcyclist early Saturday morning.

Early Saturday morning, an officer with HCPD spotted a suspicious driver heading Eastbound on Highway 501 towards myrtle Beach. When an officer found the motorcycle near Highway 501 and Forestbrook Road, he attempted to conduct a traffic stop. At first, it appeared as though the driver, 21-year-old Alexander M. Savage, of Utah, was going to stop, however, Savage took off, taking the officer on a high speed chase down Highway 501.

According to the report, when Savage was approaching a curve along Highway 501 near Broadway Street, he lost control of the motorcycle and crashed.

Officers reported noticing Savage's shoes in the roadway with pieces of the motorcycle scattered throughout the scene. Savage was reported as being in a fetal position on the sidewalk.

Horry County Police allow officers to use their own discretion when initiating and continuing a police chase. Among the criteria to be considered, according to county policy, is:

  • Reason for pursuit
  • Speed involved
  • Traffic conditions
  • Time and length of pursuit

According to the report, Savage was unresponsive and was bleeding profusely from an apparent head wound. Upon arrival, EMS declared Savage dead. Savage was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The Horry County Police Department and the South Carolina Highway Patrol continue to investigate both the chase and the crash. Both agencies stressed the investigations were routine in cases such as this weekend's incident.
