MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - In a Major League Baseball season there are 4,860 games, over the course of 2010 there were only six no-hitters thrown.

That means a no hitter occurred once every 810 games.  These stats help put in perspective just how special Myrtle Beach pitcher Alex Roberts was on the mound last week.

"A no-hitter is something you always dream of as a kid, and you always want to throw one, it really is a dream until you actually do it," said Roberts, who was able to live his baseball dream on the diamond against North Myrtle Beach.

"No pitcher wants to think about it when they have it going, but it was about the sixth inning when I said this has the potential to be something special, said Roberts."

"When you're around this game for a long time and you've seen a couple no-hitters, there's always a couple great plays in a game and we had a couple balls that were hit and our kids made some tough defensive plays," continued Myrtle Beach Head Coach Tim Christy, "I thought you know what, we just might have a chance at getting a no hitter tonight."

Sure enough they did, Alex struck out 15 batters on the way to his first career no-hitter.

With baseball being a very superstitious sport, none of Alex's fellow Seahawks spoke to him during the game because when a player is in the zone the last thing you want to do is mess up his mojo.

"I didn't speak to him the whole night.  As a matter of fact, in the first inning I found a spot, and in the second inning I went back to the spot, and by the seventh inning I was still in that spot, but that mojo worked apparently," said Christy.

While Alex added, "I sat in the corner by myself over there, and I guess that's superstitious, but I'm very superstitious too."

Superstitions or not, the magnitude of his performance has not been lost on Roberts.  He even got a call from his Newberry College coaches after the game, the school where he will be playing next year.

Alex remains committed to continuing the everyday grind of baseball, but never forgetting that magical night.
