Parents during a school board meeting when Dr. McCants was asked to resignTIMMONSVILLE, SC (WMBF) – In what the Superintendent of Florence School District Four called an error, teachers in the Timmonsville area have not been paid Friday as scheduled, and now a representative with the Department of Education has been sent to oversee operations.
According to Superintendent Dr. Bertha McCants, when the person who normally handled payroll was laid off due to budget cuts, the district did not have a plan in place for someone to take that task over.
McCants said the district did not request money from the State in time to write checks and do direct deposits for teachers during this pay period.
Sources tell WMBF that teachers have still not been paid as of Friday evening, but received postdated checks for Monday.
The teachers had discussed walking out if they did not receive their paychecks by 2 p.m. Friday. Parents also arrived at the Timmonsville Schools to attempt to learn what was happening.
Mick Zais, State Education Superintendent, has sent someone from the Department of Education to monitor operations at the school district. That person's only task is to report back to Zais and Florence delegates in Columbia on day-to-day operations they oversee.
They are not to guide or help the district with advice.
The State is also not allowed to take over the district because of financial problems. The only time they are allowed to step in is when the schools are failing to meet education standards.
