Loris Elementary kicks off anti-bullying program

Posted: Updated:

LORIS, SC (WMBF) - It's a lingering problem that affects more than 15 percent of children and teens across the U.S., and now one Horry County elementary school is doing its part to fight back against bullying.

Loris Elementary School was selected in October 2010 as a pilot school for the Olweus Bully Prevention Program. The program, a nationwide initiative launching in South Carolina, aims at reducing and eliminating bullying throughout a school setting.

The Horry County school is one of 11 schools across South Carolina piloting the program. Loris Elementary was selected to try the program by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators.

"If you start early to try to change behavior, it becomes a part of them," Loris Elementary Assistant Principal Angela Gore said.

In January, a bully prevention committee was trained to help effectively implement the program at Loris Elementary. Gore says starting with Friday's kick-off of the program, teachers will perform anti-bullying lessons once a week for 30 minutes in the classroom.

The classroom lessons will help students better understand what a bully is, signs of the problem and what to do in a bullying-type situation.

Once the program is up and running, officials say the school will be surveyed twice to see if it is working. Many people are involved in the new initiative - from bus drivers to teachers and cafeteria workers.
