Jury decides fate of suspect in Drayton Court murder

MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) - The fate of a man charged with murder was decided by a jury of his peers, according to the Horry County Solicitor's Office.
Closing arguments in the murder trial against Kareem Harry wrapped up Thursday afternoon, turning to case over to a jury.
Kareem Harry is charged with the murder of 35-year-old Kevin Bowen of Drayton Court in Murrells Inlet. After deliberations he was found guilty by a jury and sentenced to 31 years in prison.
Saire Jerrel Castro, who was also charged with murder, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in August 2012. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Horry County Public Records Sage Lee McPhail and Amanda Lee Byrne are charged with accessory after the fact of felony murder. Additional suspects, Ashley Janine Bledsoe and Thomas Gifford Byrne, are also charged in connection. The cases against there four are still pending.
After the shooting was reported, Horry County Police caught up with several of the suspects and brought them to the south precinct located along Scipio Lane in Myrtle Beach.
While investigators were questioning their involvement, Saire Castro bolted out of the interrogation room. Castro fled on foot and bloodhounds were unable to pick up a scent to track.
After an extensive search involving the US Marshal Service, Castro was located in Lakeland, FL, where he was arrested by the Polk County Sheriff's Office and US Marshals.
On March 3, 2011, Kareem Harry turned himself into authorities with the Horry County Police Department.
Sgt. Robert Kegler, spokesman for the Horry County Police Department, said officers responded to a home along Drayton Court in Murrells Inlet in reference to a shooting around 9:30 p.m. March 1 of last year.
Several neighbors reported hearing gunshots before seeing two cars flee the scene.
An official with the Horry County Coroner's Office said 35-year-old Kevin Bowens of Drayton Court was pronounced dead of his injuries at Waccamaw Hospital.
Around 9:20 p.m. that night, neighbor Brian McGarrahan was getting ready for bed. Seconds later, he said he heard gunshots.
"I heard something, I perked up, and then there were three guns shots. Bam, bam, bam," McGarrahan said.
McGarrahan said he and his neighbor Charlie went rushing out the door. "I came out of my front door, down the side walk, he came out of his saying the cars were going that way. He went through the neighborhood [and the] fences."
According to McGarrahan, Charlie ran barefoot through the neighborhood dialing 911 while talking with a dispatcher step by step about the direction the suspects' car traveled.
"Based on how quick all this happened, I'd say they captured [them] five to seven minutes after the shooting," McGarrahan said.
