BRUNSWICK COUNTY, SC (WMBF/WECT) – A 29-year-old Leland man has been arrested in connection to the shooting death of a 31-year-old man in his home Sunday afternoon.
Sgt. April Stanley, spokeswoman for the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, said deputies responded to a home along Heights Place in the Leland area around 4 p.m. in reference to a shooting.
Upon arrival, deputies found Michael Shane Poythress suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Poythress was then pronounced dead at the scene.
"I saw a dead man lying right at the front porch - right at the front steps," said neighbor Donna Garcia.
Garcia said in her 25 years of living in the neighborhood, she had never seen anything like what she saw Sunday evening.
According to Stanley, Poythress was involved in an altercation with James Carson Young that progressed into the shooting.
Neighbors say the argument stemmed from the way Young treated Poythress' girlfriend. They say the fight had been brewing between the two men since November.
"We heard them out in the yard loud, and knew they were arguing," explained Garcia. "And then next thing we heard, we heard a gunshot, and someone hollered, 'Oh my God, he shot him!'"
Young was arrested at his home Sunday evening, and is charged with one count of first degree murder. During a bond hearing Monday morning, Young received no bond.
The incident remains under investigation by the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.
