SC mulls child abuse registry after 2 big cases

GREER, SC (AP) - The prosecutor handling two recent cases of child abuse says he would support an effort to register and track people who commit such crimes.

Solicitor Walt Wilkins tells The Associated Press the cases show South Carolina needs to pay more attention to safeguard children from convicted abusers.

Jessica Blackham was arrested last week and charged with abuse after maintenance workers cleaning up after a Greenville circus discovered a newborn baby boy inside a toilet bowl.

Weeks earlier, Daron Duane Davis was arrested in Greer and charged in the death of his 5-month-old daughter. Davis was released from prison in 2006 after a 10-year sentence in the death of another child.

Greenville state Sen. Mike Fair has floated a proposal to register convicted child killers or abusers.
