DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been called in Tuesday to investigate the death of a 20-year-old Darlington County Detention Center inmate.

Capt. Andy Locklair, spokesman for the Darlington County Sheriff's Office, said jail officers discovered the man during hourly bed checks around 9:15 p.m. Monday, unresponsive. The on duty Nurse and EMS were then called to the cell block.

The man was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee has identified the man as Nyerere Deon Brown, of Darlington. Hardee says the cause of death appears to be natural, however, Brown's body was sent to Newberry Tuesday for an autopsy.

While officials do not suspect foul play at this time, it is protocol for SLED to be involved to conduct a full investigation.

According to Locklair, Brown was incarcerated on charges of armed robbery, pointing or presenting a firearm, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and breach of peace.
