MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A British psychologist has determined January 17 is the saddest day of 2011. Based on a mathematical formula, Dr. Cliff Arnall, says sadness peaks on the third Monday of the year. Now some are calling the day Blue Monday.

Several factors play into his formula, including time since Christmas holiday cheer.

"Right after Christmas is, to me, I have trouble with that," admitted Pam Botticello of Myrtle Beach.

With the holidays over she does not see friends and family as much.

Mitch Laurance of Myrtle Beach said he doubts sadness can be quantified. He does not consider himself to be a sadder person in the winter, but he does understand why some people are affected right about now.

"I think winter is a more depressing time," he said. "There's less sun, especially here in Myrtle Beach where we like sun."

Arnall's formula also takes into account debt and failed New Year's resolutions. Myrtle Beach counselor Joan Clark beliefs those factors increase this time of year.

"About the third week in January many people have found their New Year's resolutions are already being too hard to keep, and then there are those folks who have just received their December credit card bills and store bills and discovered they spent far more than they ever intended," Clark said. "

Clark's simple advice to overcome the sadness is to work past it one day at a time. She said people feeling sad need to think about holding the sadness at bay just until the end of the day because the next day is always potentially better.

"So if this is the saddest day of the year, by definition tomorrow has to be better," Clark said specifically about Blue Monday.

Clark also said people who are especially downtrodden because of failed New Year's resolutions can try again with a more attainable goal in mind.

According to Arnall's formula the happiest day of 2011 should be June 17.
