New York -

NEW YORK (NBC) - Man's best friend is being trained to protect children with severe allergies from potential threats in everyday life.

Parents with children who have allergies know just how dangerous one mistake can be. It can strike constant fear in their lives.

Enter 10-month-old pit bull mix Layla, who was rescued, and is now being trained to sniff out any form of peanuts that can trigger a deadly reaction in Grey Sheer, 6, of Manhattan.

"They were on a flight once that had peanuts in a back row and the son started to have an allergic reaction and they ended up stopping the flight," celebrity dog trainer Mike Stone said.

Stone first met Layla at Snug Pet Resort when the family was simply looking for a place to keep their dog while they went to a local theme park. They asked out of curiosity if the dog could be trained to sniff out peanuts.

"When I first met Layla, she was more interested in lying in bed and getting snuggle time than going out and working hard," Stone said.

After months of living and working with Stone, the dog is now finding and pointing out everything from sandwiches to candy bars. She recently sniffed out peanut crumbs that Stone estimated had been there for six months.

"I don't know if there's another pit bull or pit bull mix that has been trained to do this, it might very well be the first," Stone said.

Layla is set to rejoin her family in New York very soon.
