19 previous arrests for suspect in trooper murder

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Georgia State Patrol Trooper Chadwick LeCroy was killed Monday night after police say he was shot by Gregory Favors during a traffic stop.

LeCroy stopped Favors for a burned out headlight.

Favors has been arrested 19 times in the past 11 years, records show. In court on Wednesday, Favors pleaded not guilty to murder charges.

Flags outside Georgia State Patrol posts flew at half staff in LeCroy's honor. And even hundreds of miles away from Atlanta, troopers are mourning.

"When I heard the news it was like I lost a relative. It was like losing a brother that I had never really met," Trooper Joel Mock said.

Mock says this is a reminder to everyone in law enforcement that things can go very wrong at anytime.

"It's an extra element making us realize that we have to expect the unexpected and there is no such thing as a routine traffic stop in our work," Mock said.

There are only about 600 troopers covering the entire state of Georgia. To put that into perspective, Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department has 800 officers.

Making it even tougher on them because of budget cuts, the Georgia State Patrol is now nearly 350 troopers short.
