Horry County, SC -
HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Less than a week after beginning a DUI enforcement blitz, preliminary numbers from the South Carolina Highway Patrol have been released detailing their progress.
The campaign, which is meant to arrest drunk drivers, is a special project of several state law enforcement groups, and produced the following arrest numbers in several counties, according to Lance Cpl Sonny Collins of the SCHP:
- Horry County - 22
- Darlington - 6
- Dillon - 8
- Florence - 20
- Marlboro - 2
- Marion - 0
- Georgetown - 3
As part of the DUI blitz, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety released a series of ads to get the word out about how dangerous it is to drink and drive.
The Highway Patrol says DUI arrests are up more than 72 percent since 2006, and Captain JoNathan Nell of the Highway Patrol says it's still a concern.
"We're still having problems with people driving under the influence, and our main job is to try to save lives, and this is one of the things we do to try to save lives," said JoNathan about the campaign.
There will also be a crack down in the courtroom, each judicial circuit in the state has received money from a federal grant to hire a prosecutor to work specifically on DUI cases.
