HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Horry County Police Department and local schools paired up Saturday to meet the needs of dozens of disadvantaged children.

Police collect donations every year and sponsor an event called Shop with a Cop.  The school system selects a number of children in need to go on a Christmas time shopping spree with an officer. The children are transported by a school bus from the police station to a retail store and given a set dollar figure they can spend.

The police officers act as mentors and chaperones as they stroll down the isles, picking out toys and clothes.

"It's Christmas and we just want to make some family happy," said Officer David Hucks with HCPD.

After the shopping trip, the children get back on the bus and return to the police department where staff and volunteers have prepared a lunch. The original plan was have the lunch outdoors; however, with the cold and rainy weather, the workers had to move things inside.

This year, a church has help by making a box of food for families to enjoy on Christmas complete with turkey and cranberry sauce, Hucks says.
