HARTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) – A 23-year-old man is dead after officials with the Darlington County Sheriff's office say a neighbor shot him Tuesday afternoon.

Capt. Andy Locklair, spokesperson for the Darlington County Sheriff's Office, said Alonzo Rhodes, 43, of Hartsville shot the victim around 1:30 p.m. in Rhodes' residence along Martin Luther King Boulevard, killing him.]

"I grew up with him since we was little. My grandma raised us," Ebone Jett said. She and Hill were cousins and says his death comes at a very difficult time.

"My grandma passed away and now it's him, seven months later... It's just hard, very hard."

Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee said Anthony Hill, also of Hartsville, died from gunshot wounds sustained in the shooting.

"Words can't really express how you feel," Hill's Aunt Blondell Miller said. "I know the family, we are just trying to get through. I know the days ahead are going to be very difficult."

After the shooting, area schools were immediately placed on lock down for about two hours until Rhodes turned himself into authorities. At that time, the lock down was lifted and students were safely dismissed.

Rhodes has been arrested on a family court bench warrant and is currently being held in the Darlington County Detention Center as investigators continue their investigation.

More charges could be brought against Rhodes. Deputies are currently looking into a motive for the shooting.

Hardee said Hill's body will be transported to Newberry County Memorial Hospital for an autopsy Wednesday.

This incident is still under investigation.
