DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) – A deputy with the Darlington County Sheriff's Office is in the hospital after an accident during a car chase Sunday.

Cpt. Andy Locklair, spokesperson for the Darlington Co. Sheriff's Office, said a deputy attempted to make a routine traffic stop along Highway 52 when the driver of the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed.

The deputy engaged in a pursuit of the vehicle. At some point during his pursuit, the deputy was forced off the road, slamming into the underpinning of a vacant mobile home, which caused damage to both his car and the home.

At that time, the driver of the vehicle fled into a wooded area.

Officials said the deputy exited his vehicle and attempted to pursue the driver on foot, but was unable to catch up to him. The passenger of the vehicle, David Joe, 47, of Darlington, was arrested soon after by deputies assisting in the chase.

He was transported to the Darlington County Detention Center and has been charged with giving false information to a law enforcement officer.

After the pursuit, the deputy originally involved in the chase collapsed, complaining of a head injury. He was taken to an area hospital and is expected to fully recover.

Jermaine Berry, 33, of Darlington, was driving the fleeing vehicle. He turned himself in to the Darlington County Sheriff's Office Tuesday and is charged with failing to stop for a blue light and driving under suspension.
