NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – It wouldn't be much of a stretch to call North Myrtle Beach's volleyball team a family. That applies to a lot of teams, especially this one.
The Lady Chiefs are undefeated on the season and an exceptionally close group. That may be in large part because nearly half the members of the varsity squad have a sister on the team.
"It's fun being able to grow with [my sister] and set her up, it's awesome," said North Myrtle Beach senior Megan Johnson, whose sister Ellen is also on the team.
The pairs of sisters say there is very rarely rivalry between them. They say, however, the support provided between siblings is constant.
"[My sister is] able to pick me up when I'm down," said Chiefs senior Grace Jones, whose sister Moriah is on the team as well. "She's able to push me and I'm able to push her."
The Chiefs' head coach, Estelle Barentine, says her team has an advantage: the younger of the sibling pairs got head starts learning the game, watching their older sisters play. She can see the bonds between them on the court as well.
"They're competitive, but I don't see it between the sisters," said Barentine. "What I see between the sisters is respect and love."
