CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - One woman is dead following a late night fire at a home outside of Conway.
Firefighters from the Conway Fire Department and Horry County Fire Rescue responded to the home along Firehouse Road at 10:35 p.m. Tuesday, according to HCFR spokeswoman Leslie Yancey. Upon arrival, firefighters faced heavy smoke and flames coming from inside of the home.
Family members on scene have identified the victim as Angela Cannon, 51. They said Cannon had been suffering from Stage 4 lung cancer and was the only one home at the time of the fire.
The Horry County Coroner's Office said the woman died from smoke inhalation.
Cannon's husband told WMBF News he was working a few hours away from their home with one of their two sons on Tuesday night. Family members said the initial 911 call was made by two relatives who live next to Cannon's home.
They said they attempted to go inside and search for the woman, but were overwhelmed by heavy smoke. Instead, they were forced to wait on fire crews to arrive.
Horry County Fire Rescue investigators said the fire originated in the home's master bedroom, but have yet to identify what sparked the fire.
