GARDEN CITY, SC (WMBF) - Walmart will begin moving merchandise into their new Garden City location Monday.
With construction complete, Store Manager Scott Brisson says they are entering the final stretch before their slated opening day in October.
Robin Grey had been in the restaurant and resort business at the beach for years, and hopes to capitalize on the new opportunities Walmart will bring the immediate community.
"With the economy the last couple of years, they would have to close for a couple of months in the winter season," Grey explained.
She says that meant fewer hours and more anxiety.
"It just was a very stressful," she said. "Not [a] stable environment for me."
Grey says when her husband set her in front of the computer and told her to apply for one of the 400 positions at the new Garden City location, it was a no-brainer.
"I just thought it would be better to do something like this," she said. "I don't think Walmart is going anywhere."
Now Grey is being kept busy as the store gets built one display at a time, creating new space for customers - many of whom have been making the trip to Surfside to a store that can only be described as hectic.
"[Its] very crowded," Grey said emphatically. "So its very exciting to know we have a new one here."
"Our stores are large and they do a lot of businesses," Brisson said. "Obviously sometimes they are so large the store becomes very taxed with the amount of customers and so forth. So this will actually be a greater shopping experience not only for the Garden City area, but for some of the surrounding areas also."
"It's a brand new opportunity. A new store," Grey added. "Everything's new [and] there's a lot of growth here."
It's growth that is going in aisle by aisle as employees like Grey sprint for an Oct. 13 opening day.
