FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – South Florence High School football has gone from door-mat to dominant. It's been an impressive rise, matching their impressive offense.
That unit is led by our WMBF News Athlete of the week, a player whose team-first mentality embodies what has the bruins where they are today.
"We expect to win," Bruins quarterback Kaleb Griffin said.
Griffin, a senior, is good at a lot of things - specifically, throwing for a lot of yards and a lot of touchdowns. What he's not particularly good at is taking much credit for his team's success.
"We've had the same coach for the last three years," Griffin said. "Been working hard in the weight room in the off-season, learning the offense. We have some good guys working hard."
The rest of the Bruins are more than willing to give their QB credit.
"He's a great quarterback, he does tremendous things for us," South Florence head coach Lynn Fleming said. "He really leads our team, especially on offense, and always gets us in good situations."
"He's a great leader on the team," Bruins receiver and defensive back Michael Muhammad said. "It's great to have him leading the team, everyone on the same page and stuff."
Griffin has been lighting up score-boards for a while now. He hopes to play college football, but he's still waiting on his first big-time offer.
"He's flying a little under the radar," Fleming said. "But I think he has the tools to play that level of football, so I look for a lot more interest to start coming around."
For now, college football is far from Griffin's mind. All he is concerned about is taking South Florence somewhere, just a few years ago, no one would've seen them going.
"Win regions, win state," Griffin said. "That's everybody's goal."
Griffin and the Bruins host Lake City Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
