SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A quiet town near the South Carolina coast is considering whether to give final approval to an ordinance banning illegal immigrants from living in the town limits.

Summerville town council gave initial approval on a 4-2 vote last month after about hearing about 90 minutes of arguments for and against the measure. It weighs final approval Wednesday night.

Under the proposed ordinance, renters would have to prove they are American citizens or in the country legally. A verification form would have to be filed with the town.

A representative of the American Civil Liberties Union has said there are questions about the constitutionality of the ordinance and that immigration is a federal, not a local issue.
