Surfside Beach family searches for missing tortoise

Surfside Beach, SC - SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A Surfside Beach family is hoping someone will find their pet tortoise that went missing on Monday afternoon.

Megala's owner, Mardi Parker, said the 2' tortoise went missing Monday between noon at 2:30 p.m. while her family was out of town. Parker said friends who were watching the tortoise stopped by her home to check on Megala at noon, but when they arrived back at the residence at 2:30 p.m., he was missing.

Parker claims the back gate had been left open, possibly prompting the escape.

While many may think it would be hard for Megala to leave his backyard, this isn't the first time the tortoise has pulled a disappearing act. On Sept. 3, 2009, Megala wandered off from his home.

The tortoise was found at Ocean Lakes Campground after a call for help was aired on WMBF News.

Megala's family hopes viewers will help find the tortoise once again. If he is found, Parker is asking that the tortoise not be put in water. He cannot swim.
