Police investigate golf cart thefts over Labor Day

Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Eight golf carts were stolen in different areas of Horry County over the Labor Day weekend, according to Horry County Police.

Sgt. Robert Kegler, spokesman for the department, said the vehicles were stolen from beach access parking lots and homes in Garden City and Surfside Beach. Investigators believe the golf carts were apparently driven into a trailer and hauled away.

Officials recommend golf cart owners take the following precautions to reduce the risk of theft:

  • Don't leave the key in the ignition when the cart is unoccupied
  • Secure the golf cart using a chain or boot of some sort
  • Consider changing the ignition on your golf cart. A standard golf cart key may be able to fit the stock ignition and start multiple golf carts of the same model
  • Tag your golf cart with a unique marking to make it easily recognizable

Anyone with information on the golf cart thefts in the Surfside Beach and Garden City areas are asked to call Horry County Police at 843-915-5350.
