Ga. sheriff's deputy kills man in patrol car

Augusta, GA - RICHMOND COUNTY, GA (AP) - The Richmond County Sheriff's Office says a deputy shot and killed a man during a struggle in his patrol car.

The Augusta Chronicle reports that Sheriff Ronnie Strength says the sheriff's office got a call late Monday afternoon from a restaurant about a man who had been bathing in the restroom. Strength says the officer escorted the man to his patrol car and put him in the back.

Strength says the man reached into a bag he had with him, prompting a struggle that ended when the deputy shot the man in the chest. Strength says a gun was found inside the bag. The names of the officer and the man killed have not been released.
