Old Navy Hospital in SC closing, new clinic coming

North Charleston, SC -

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The clinic in the old Charleston Naval Hospital is closing but military personnel and retirees on the South Carolina coast will soon have a new clinic.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Tuesday the old clinic is closing Sept. 17, to be replaced by a new $47 million facility at the Naval Weapons Station starting Sept. 20.

The clinic has been in the former Charleston Naval Hospital after the Navy closed the Charleston Naval Base and shipyard in 1995.

The clinic commander, Capt. Paula McClure, says about 15,000 military retirees in the Charleston area use the clinic.

The old site will become the property of the Government Services Administration. It's unclear what the federal agency will do with the building, constructed in 1973.
