GREENVILLE, SC (AP) - The number of South Carolinians looking for work has been uncharacteristically high the past few years with a record 12.5% of the state's work force unemployed in January.
But some economists say one company could single-handedly reduce the jobless rate with its addition of 1,000 workers over the summer.
The Greenville News reported Sunday that economists say when BMW Manufacturing Co. hires a worker it leads to the hiring of about 3 other workers in other businesses. And that could lower the unemployment rate by more than 1%age point.
With the new hires, BMW will have more than 7,000 workers at its plant located between Greenville and Spartanburg near Greer.
