Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Horry County Schools and Horry County Fire Rescue have teamed up to create a new program aimed at helping students at the Academy for Technology and Academics prepare for a career in firefighting.
Horry County Rescue has established an Explorer Post through the Boy Scouts of America and South Carolina Fire Academy to offer this two-year program to high school juniors and seniors.
Students who successfully complete the program and have reached the age of 18 will receive National Fire Protection Association Firefighter I certification through the South Carolina Fire Academy. They will also receive National Registry EMS First Responder certification.
With these certifications, students will qualify to serve as volunteers with Horry County Fire Rescue without having to repeat training and will be eligible to test for a career position.
The program is the first of its kind in South Carolina.
A media day will be held on Sept. 9 at the Academy for Technology and Academics at 10 a.m.
