SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A brazen burglary in an east Savannah neighborhood lands four men in jail.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police said the men broke into a soldier's home on Durant Avenue in the Gordonston neighborhood on Sunday.

The soldier, an Army Ranger stationed at Hunter Army, wasn't home. He is deployed to the Middle East.

Sunday afternoon the sun was out and so was neighbor Jonathan Carter. He too lives on Durant Avenue. He said that at about 3 p.m. he saw the men with two trucks, unloading everything out of the soldier's home across the street.

"They were taking couches, beds, dressers; I mean, they were clearing the whole house out," said Carter.

Carter said at first he thought the men were movers. "They were slow moving, doing what they needed to do, taking their time, broad daylight. I thought something was a little fishy about it. I called the cops, they can and arrested them, it was great."

Carter said he's glad police got these suspected burglars off the street. "We are just watching everybody's back around here, this is a nice neighborhood. We want to keep it that way."

Police arrested Thomas Lawton, Dominque Matthews, Fredrick Quarterman and Ray Wakefield. They are each charged with burglary. According to the police report they told officers they were helping a friend move, but they couldn't say who that friend was.

They will all be back in court Sept. 7 for their preliminary hearing. Until then they are in the Chatham County jail without bond.

Police said they notified the Army Ranger's supervisor about the break-in and the Army has secured the home until the Ranger returns.
