Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - A 22-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection to beating a Pee Dee teen with a broken coffee mug on Aug. 20.
Chase Lewis McClary was arrested Thursday evening in Charlotte by officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, according to Capt. Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff's Office.
McClary has been accused of beating a 16-year-old with a broken coffee mug and using racial slurs during an altercation in the Brandon Woods subdivision of Florence County on Aug. 20. Officials said the victim received "extensive cuts" and injuries to his face that required significant medical care.
The incident has prompted authorities to charge McClary with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
Nunn said McClary refused to waive extradition back to South Carolina to face his charges. McClary has also been denied bond, pending the outcome of an extradition hearing. The hearing, according to Nunn, will be scheduled for a later date.
"Naturally, we want McClary returned to Florence County to face the charge filed against him," Sheriff Kenney Boone stated. "We are doing all we can to make that happen, but we have to wait until the North Carolina process takes its course."
Further investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office and U.S. Department of Justice could lead officials to classify the incident as a hate crime due to the use of racial slurs.
The 22-year-old is currently being held at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.
