SCDA names new equine marketing specialist

Columbia, SC -

COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) – The SC Department of Agriculture named a new equine marketing specialist.

Marsha Hewitt of Bishopville has been named the new specialist following the retirement of longtime specialist Mary Ellen Tobias.

"Marsha's knowledge and love of the equine industry made her the right choice for this important role," South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers said.

A graduate of Meredith College, Hewitt's career spans 25 years as a writer and editor at two daily newspapers and a weekly paper. For five years she served as a features editor for SC Homes & Gardens magazine, a high-end statewide publication.

She is also a commissioner for Pee Dee Tourism.

"Our state has so many wonderful opportunities for horses and horse people. We have a great park system, and we can ride anywhere from the mountains to the beach. One of my goals is to use horses to promote agritourism," Hewitt said.

Immediate projects include compiling directories of horse-related services on a regional or even county basis, a statewide disaster preparedness plan for equines, and working with the many breed associations in the state.

Hewitt can be reached at 803-734-0106 or at mhewitt@scda.sc.gov
