MBACC increases stakes for Biggest Loser Challenge

Myrtle Beach, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce is giving area schools a $1,500 incentive to get students signed up for September's Biggest Loser 5k/1 Mile Challenge.

Officials said the organization will be awarding one Horry County school with $1,500 in new physical education equipment for signing up the largest number of paid participants.

"We are extremely grateful to the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce for including our students in the promotion of this event. Horry County Schools enthusiastically support activities such as 'Biggest Loser' that encourage children to adopt healthy lifestyles," Horry County Schools Superintendent Dr. Cindy Elsberry said.

Elsberry said flyers will be distributed throughout Horry County schools this week to encourage participation among students, family and friends. Physical education teachers at each school will track the number of participants involved in the incentives program.

The Biggest Loser 5k/1 Mile Challenge is a series of nationwide 5k and one mile events aimed at inspiring healthy lifestyles. The series kicks off in Myrtle Beach on Sept. 25 at 8 a.m.

The Myrtle Beach 5k will start at 8 a.m. on Ocean Boulevard between Eighth and Ninth Avenues North and run south along Ocean Boulevard through Family Kingdom Amusement Park. The finish line will be on the brand new Myrtle Beach Boardwalk between Eighth and Ninth Avenues North.

The one mile challenge starts at 8:30 a.m. and will be a shorter version of the same start and finish pattern.

The Biggest Loser's popular trainer Bob Harper and other past contestants of the reality show will be on hand after the challenge for meet and greets. All participants will receive a Biggest Loser Event Challenge T-shirt and finisher medal.
