Farmers blame Mother Nature for damaged crops

Wilmington, NC - COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Farmers in Columbus County are concerned that Mother Nature will cause them to lose money from damaged crops this year.

Much of the corn in the area is drying out because of the excessive heat this summer. Some farmers have already begun picking corn, which is earlier than normal, but are facing some problems.

The fields are so wet you can hear the ground squish beneath your feet with every step.  Farmers say the weather has turned their fields into a soggy nightmare.  The ground is too sloppy for them to use the necessary equipment to pick corn.

Many farmers in Columbus County will lose money on their crops this year, but it's unclear how much money will be lost until they begin harvesting the corn in September.
