Columbia, SC - SOUTH CAROLINA (WMBF) - The South Carolina Organ and Tissue Donor Registry has reached a major milestone less than two years after its launch, as officials announce more than 500,000 people are signed up for the statewide program.
More than a half a million people will have registered their legal consent to become organ and tissue donors in South Carolina on Friday, according to program officials.
Prior to the launch of the SC Organ and Tissue Donor Registry, an estimated 1.2 million South Carolina residents had the red heart symbol on their driver's licenses and identification cards.
"With this new milestone the registry now contains one-third of the number of people who had previously indicated a desire to become a donor," Mark Johnson, spokesman for LifePoint, said. "The challenge is still to reach the people who already believe they are in a registry, in addition to those who have never considered donation in the past."
The creation of the registry has allowed South Carolina to join a majority of states in having an official organ and tissue donor registry.
