Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant to hold emergency test

Brunswick County, NC - BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WMBF) – An emergency preparedness exercise in support of the Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 31.

The exercise is conducted every two years to test emergency procedures at the plant and in county and state government agencies as required by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Participants in the exercise include the counties of Brunswick and New Hanover, the State of North Carolina and Progress Energy.

Tests of the sirens in the 10 mile Emergency Planning Zone at the plant will only be simulated, so the public will not hear sirens. The Emergency Alert System will also be simulated, so local television and radio stations will not interrupt their regular programming to broadcast messages.

There will be a public critique of the exercise on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 11 a.m. at the Progress Energy Media Center.  The public and news media are invited to attend this session.
