HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A few weeks ago we reported on the issue of abandoned boats along area waterways and Horry County Councilman Brent Schulz's effort to address that problem.
Many times we see political leaders paying lip service to local issues and never following up with any action. We're pleased to report that Schulz not only brought the abandoned boat issue to our attention, but he is leading the charge to solve the problem.
Consider This: Councilman Schulz introduced a new ordinance that should help combat the growing problem of abandoned boats along the Intracoastal Waterway.
"Right now we don't have an ordinance in place that allows us to do anything with the boats at all," said Schulz.
The new law would levy stiff penalties to people found guilty of abandonment and it would make the county eligible for state and federal grants which could help pay for the removal of the derelict vessels. Some states are also considering laws that would allow boat owners to turn in their boats without penalty helping to reduce the abandonment numbers and the eventual clean-up costs. That may be something to investigate further that could help with our local ordinance.
Thank you Councilman Schulz for not only helping to make everyone aware of this issue, but more importantly utilizing your position to do something that will help to resolve the problem.
