Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Officials are on the hunt for two suspects who robbed a Florence drive-through at gunpoint moments after inquiring about purchasing old jewelry.
Florence Police were called to We Buy Gold, located at 400 Pamplico Hwy., at 1:34 p.m. after a new store employee reported he had been robbed at gunpoint by two black males.
The employee told investigators the two men approached the store's drive-through window and pulled out a semi-automatic handgun after asking to purchase previously owned jewelry. Officials said the store employee handed over $640 in cash, the company checkbook and personal cell phone to meet the demands of the suspects.
The employee told police the suspects ordered the man to the floor and threatened to shoot him if he moved. The suspects, according to investigators, left the store property in a southeast direction on Pamplico Highway.
"That's incredible that somebody would do that in the middle of the day time with so many people around," said Allen Land while filling up gas tank at the BP just next door. "Apparently people are desperate."
Monday's armed robbery is the latest of at least five armed robberies that have occurred in Florence over the past few weeks.
"I've had friends who've had their cars broke into - usually at night," said Kyle Miller, who has lived in Florence his whole life. He thinks these crime sprees are a sign of hard economic times. "Times being what they are, people are going to do what they're going to do."
Police have described one of the two suspects as a black male, standing 5'8" and weighing 200 pounds. Investigators said the man was wearing a dark blue T-shirt, jeans and a dark blue hat at the time of the armed robbery.
The second robbery suspect has been described as 6' and was wearing a white tank top, light jeans with orange pockets and an orange hat.
Officials said We Buy Gold is a drive-through gold store that buys old or used gold. Police said no actual jewelry is kept at the store.
Anyone with information on the armed robbery or location of the suspects is asked to call the Florence Police Department immediately.
