Mother, twin boys killed in West Ashley fire

Charleston, SC - WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - A woman and twin 3-year-old boys are dead after a house fire in West Ashley.

The fire happened Tuesday night at a home on Greenpark Avenue not far from Ashley Crossing Lane.

Firefighters were called to the home at 9:09 p.m. after a friend of the victims reported the fire.

The friend, who did not want to release his name, was visibly shaken by the tragic circumstances. According to him, smoke was pouring out of a side door of the house.

He said he went inside and called out the mother's name. When she appeared, she yelled "the babies" and ran back into the smoke. She returned and threw one of the twins into his arms.

The friend said he took the boy to the front yard and a 911 operator gave him CPR instructions until help arrived.

Several fire departments were dispatched to the scene, including the Charleston, St. Andrews and St. Johns Fire Departments.

Firefighters arrived to heavy smoke and found the other victims inside. The woman and small boys were rushed to the hospital where they were later pronounced dead.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials think it may have started in the kitchen.
