Woman, 4-year-old injured in jet ski accident

Myrtle Beach, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A 4-year-old suffered minor injuries after being involved in a jet ski accident on the Intracoastal Waterway Tuesday afternoon.

Cpl. John Floyd, spokesman for the SC Department of Natural Resources, said the 4-year-old was riding on front of a rented jet ski with her mother when the watercraft hit a tree near the Fantasy Harbor Bridge.

The mother said while she was attempting to turn the jet ski, the 4-year-old shifted her weight and hit the steering wheel with her knee, causing the watercraft to go off course. Investigators said the jet ski hit a tree and set of branches sticking out of the water.

"She was trying to be a little safe by being close to shore to stay away from traffic," Floyd said.

Floyd said the 4-year-old had a slight eye injury and a swollen ear as a result of the accident. The mother received some scratches on her face and arms after brushing against the tree branches.

The 4-year-old was taken to an area hospital as a precaution to receive treatment.

Investigators report the jet ski did not sustain any damage in the accident.
