Horry County, SC - LONGS, SC (WMBF) - A blue tarp continues to cover a portion of a home in Longs that was damaged by lightning Thursday afternoon.
Leslie Yancey, spokeswoman for Horry County Fire Rescue, said firefighters were called to an address along Quail Court at 2:30 p.m. after learning lightning had damaged a home in the Long Bay Club golf community.
One of two people inside of the home at the time said the lightning caused the entire structure to shake and filled the attic with smoke. Upon arrival, firefighters found a 1-square-foot hole in the roof of the single-story home.
Despite reports of smoke, fire investigators said no fire was reported. The two people inside of the home at the time of the lightning strike were not injured.
"It's very unnerving. It's like disbelief," commented homeowner Marie Alexander. "You can't hardly believe that it happened. I was very fortunate. There was not a lot of damage. There could have been a lot more."
A fire and water restoration team was called to the home to mend the damaged roof.
